Volunteer Information

We are delighted that you are considering volunteering with COPTrust. Volunteers are an important part of our work in serving disadvantaged communities.

Please read the information below carefully so that you know what to expect before and during your stay with us.

Register to Volunteer

1. Before You Arrive
  • You will need to complete and return a Volunteer Information Sheet.
  • Once you have confirmation of your accommodation, please send us your flight details.
  • On arrival, you will be welcomed, briefed, and asked to sign the COPTrust Safeguarding Policy to ensure the protection of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in all our programme’s.
  • Accommodation is provided at COPTrust volunteer housing.
  • We try to arrange single rooms, but when there are many volunteers, you
may be required to share. (Families and married couples will not be asked
    to share.)
  • Bedding is provided. Please bring your own towels and toiletries.
  • Rooms are charged at R20 per night.
  • Internet access is available in the accommodation units. Please bring your
    own laptop.
  • Kitchen facilities are available for you to prepare meals.
  • Volunteers are expected to arrange their own meals.
  • Opportunities exist to share meals with fellow volunteers and with local brothers and sisters who will warmly welcome you into their homes.
  • A valid driver’s license is essential, as you may be allocated a vehicle for use during your stay.
  • If you do not have a license, please inform us in advance so we can determine if arrangements can be made for you to join other drivers.
  • Vehicles are shared between volunteers. Weekly planning meetings will be held to coordinate usage.
  • Fuel (petrol/gas) costs are your own responsibility.
  • Anti-malarial medication is not required for Durban or our project areas. If you plan to visit certain game reserves in summer, you may need to reconsider.
  • Please ensure you have valid travel and medical insurance covering health, laptop, mobile phone, and camera.
  • Durban and Johannesburg are hot in summer, so bring light, loose clothing, shorts, and swimwear. Winters in Durban are generally mild, though unexpected cold weather can occur. Johannesburg winters, however, are much colder, especially in the early mornings and evenings. Please come prepared for all weather conditions.
  • Most volunteers purchase a South African SIM card (available at the airport or local cell phone shops with your passport).
  • Internet is available at the accommodation units.
  • COPTrust runs a variety of programme’s: crèches, youth groups, feeding projects, elderly programme’s, faith-based programme’s, and community development initiatives.
During your first week, you will be introduced to many of these projects. Thereafter, you may have some choice in where you serve.
  • You are expected to follow the guidance of project leaders while involved in any programme.
COPTrust holds a weekly meeting. Attendance is encouraged so that you can understand the progress of projects and upcoming activities.
  • Community outreach is an important part of our Touch and Teach method of preaching in God’s vineyard.
  • We value volunteers who are motivated, enthusiastic, independent, reliable, and responsible.
  • The more open you are for God to use you in His service, the more you will grow in ways you never thought possible.
