Elderly Care

Overview

The Elderly Care Initiative exists to support and strengthen the lives of Gogos (grandmothers) and elderly community members. Many live on small pensions and care for grandchildren, often facing isolation, food insecurity, and limited opportunities to connect with others. Through this initiative, COPTrust provides practical support, social engagement, and opportunities to learn new skills, helping Gogos manage their households and participate in community life.

Building Strong Communities

What We Offer

  • Wellness and health awareness sessions
  • Skills training in crafts, sewing, knitting, and gardening
  • Social gatherings and peer support groups
  • Educational workshops on nutrition, financial literacy, and caregiving
  • Food security support through community gardens and monthly food parcels

Weekly Gogo Programme

Elderly community members gather weekly at our Good News Centres for a light lunch, crafts, sewing, knitting, and meaningful discussions. These sessions reduce isolation and bring joy, while also passing skills between generations.

Personal Story:

Gogo Thandi shared that the weekly programme has become her “second home.” Living alone, she found companionship and a renewed sense of purpose as she now teaches knitting to others.

Joint Gogo Gatherings

Every three months, Gogos from multiple Good News Centres come together for a day of connection. COPTrust provides transport, lunch, and guest speakers who share on health, wellness, and encouragement.

Personal Story:

Gogo Nomsa says these gatherings are the highlight of her year: “I look forward to seeing friends from other centres, learning new skills, and enjoying a meal together.”

Gogo Community Gardens

COPTrust provides training and encouragement for Gogos to start and maintain their own home vegetable gardens, helping improve nutrition, lower household food costs, and promote healthier living. In addition, COPTrust currently funds and supports two larger community gardens at our centres, with the vision of expanding this initiative so that all centres can benefit from shared gardening projects in the future.

Monthly Food Parcels

COPTrust provides monthly food parcels containing essentials such as maize meal, beans, and cooking oil. These parcels help Gogos stretch their small pensions, which often support whole households in the face of high unemployment, making it a little easier to provide for those who depend on them

Umthande Elderly Care Centre Support

COPTrust visits Umthande Elderly Care Centre twice a week to provide spiritual support, practical workshops on budgeting and wills, fun activities, sports days, and an annual outing with lunch to engage residents and celebrate their contribution to the community.

Impact So Far

  • 85 Gogos actively participating weekly in the programme
  • 85 food parcels distributed monthly
  • Growing networks of peer support and friendship

Why It Matters

Many elderly in our communities live alone or care for grandchildren on small pensions. They often face isolation, food insecurity, and limited opportunities for engagement. The Elderly Care Initiative provides support that strengthens resilience, improves well-being, and creates spaces where Gogos feel valued and connected
